Founded in 1951, the Nature Conservancy is a global conservation organization dedicated to conserving the lands and waters on which all life depends. Guided by science, we create innovative, on-the-ground solutions to our world’s toughest challenges so that nature and people can thrive together. We are tackling climate change, conserving lands, waters and oceans at unprecedented scale, providing food and water sustainably and helping make cities more sustainable. One of our core values is our commitment to diversity. Therefore, we strive for a globally diverse and culturally competent workforce. Working in 72 countries, including all 50 United States, we use a collaborative approach that engages local communities, governments, the private sector, and other partners. In Pennsylvania, this has translated into a range of discrete TNC programs, preserves and managed lands that advance the health of forest and river ecosystems. The organization also tackles conservation issues in urban settings from within the heart of Pennsylvania’s largest cities, including mitigating impact of stormwater run-off on urban river systems and conserving urban green spaces and habitat. Particular statewide emphasis is given to the forest ecosystem of the Central Appalachians, watershed management and restoring flow to the state’s three great river systems, and on the downstream impact upon the Chesapeake ecosystem. TNC has directly contributed to nearly 100k acres protected in the state to date, of which 82k are managed by TNC and a further 68k bound by other agreements. 40 staff are located in Harrisburg, Long Pond, Conshohocken, Williamsport and Philadelphia, supported by a board of trustees and 31,000 members. The Pennsylvania chapter has an annual budget of $6.5 million.

TNC recognizes the need to dramatically increase engagement and relevance among diverse communities, particularly among communities of color. TNC is also deeply committed to building a strong culture of philanthropy that engages ALL staff and board members in active solicitation of donor support for transformative conservation that reaches across state boundaries.
