Pennsylvania Campus Compact: 2003 Conference Proposals

Request for Workshop Proposals

Recent articles in the Chronicle of Higher Education reveal that college and university students are emerging as a “swing” population in the 2004 presidential election. This finding is consistent with other educational research that indicates students are becoming more politically active. Higher education organizations such as Campus Compact have been active in promoting civic behaviors among students and civic engagement practices for higher education institutions.

This year’s conference focuses upon the “engaging practices” that encourage, invite, and compel civic participation from students. To this end, we are inviting workshop proposals that will highlight best practices, programs, and educational foundations that underpin the development of students as civic leaders, as well as the role of academic institutions as enabling mechanisms for civic engagement.

Proposals should resonate with the conference theme, Grassroots Democracy: Engaging Practices for Change, and connect with the following themes that last year’s conference participants suggested for future exploration:

  • Student political activism
  • Service-Learning course development
  • Social Justice
  • Community partnerships
  • Grant writing
  • Use of ice breakers
  • Reflection
  • Panels on student initiatives
  • Volunteer recruitment

The workshop should be a balance between sharing your expertise/experience and actively engaging the workshop participants. Workshops should last 75 minutes, attract approximately 35 people, and appeal to students and/or faculty/staff of colleges and universities.

Proposals should be sent by July 9, 2003 to:

    Pennsylvania Campus Compact
    800 North Third Street
    Suite 402
    Harrisburg, PA 17102

Please direct any questions to Jaimie Birge or Michele Lowrey at (717) 232-4446.
