PennCORD Civic Opportunities Fair
Posted by on March 01, 2010
The Pennsylvania Coalition for Representative Democracy (PennCORD) invites you to participate in our second annual Civic Opportunities Fair for high school and college students, taking place at the National Constitution Center on Monday, March 29, 2010 from 3:00 to 6:00 p.m. (Note new time) PennCORD is generously supported by the Annenberg Foundation.
Last year, PennCORD’s first Civic Opportunities Fair was a huge success. Thirty local organizations met with nearly 300 students from more than 100 area schools, all of whom were eager to find new ways to get involved as active citizens. We are hopeful that your organization will attend the 2010 Civic Opportunities Fair so that interested students can learn about your organization and what you have to offer—from activities and volunteer work to internships and part-time jobs.
With studies indicating that civic learning experiences at a young age lead to increased civic engagement in later life, the Civic Opportunities Fair is designed to show teens and young adults that there are many enriching and worthwhile ways to get involved in their communities. Students also tell us that they want to be more involved in extracurricular activities. A recent poll taken at the Philadelphia Youth Commission’s Mayoral Forum showed that the primary concern of student participants was the threat of recreation center closings and the scarcity of part-time work during the economic downturn.
We hope you will reply with your commitment to participate in the 2010 Civic Opportunities Fair by Monday, March 15, 2010 to penncord@constitutioncenter.org or (215) 409-6623. Note that space is limited, so please register early.
