Job Title:Peer Facilitator DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Position Overview:
The Peer Facilitator (PF) will co-facilitate Wellness Self-Management classes at Project H.O.M.E. residences, as well as work with residents individually to support their recovery goals. The goals of Wellness Self-Management classes include empowering residents to make choices in their lives, increasing residents’ sense of self-efficacy and self-esteem, improving their decision-making and assertiveness skills, helping them to make connections in the community, and increasing their awareness of how mental illness affects their lives. By facilitating the Wellness Self-Management groups, the PF will assist in the development of a culture of recovery and peer support, in which Project H.O.M.E. residents are encouraged to build and strengthen relationships with their peers and maximize their use of community resources. The PF will be responsible for recruiting residents for the classes, planning for each session, preparing supplemental materials, facilitating the classes, and providing updates to the Recovery Services Coordinator
Responsibilities:
Participate in training on Wellness Self-Management classes.
Assist with the planning of Wellness Self-Management classes.
Contribute to the recruitment process.
Review the material prior to classes, meet with co-facilitator weekly to prepare for classes. Assist residents in completing evaluation tools and wellness assignments.
As needed, prepare supplemental material (such as handouts, snacks, etc.) for each group, and inform Recovery Services Coordinator ahead of time of any necessary materials for the group.
Facilitate twice weekly, 90-minute classes at several residences, providing a balance between the structure necessary to cover the material and the free expression of ideas and feelings by all participants.
Introduce residents to the group at the start of the session and provide for appropriate termination at the end of the session.
Mediate conflicts that occur within the group.
Elicit input from all group members.
Provide support and constructive feedback to group members, treating everyone with dignity and respect.
Use one’s own experience of recovery as a model for the group.
Engage appropriately with persons in recovery and support them in identifying strengths, existing supports, and community resources.
Meet regularly with supervisor to provide updates and to seek feedback, and participate in group supervision with all Peer Facilitators.
Attend required trainings and continuing education courses as recommended by supervisor.
EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS:Ability to read and write English. H.S. Diploma or GED required. Able to document work accurately and utilize a computer for email and documentation.
EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
DBH Peer Specialist Certification is strongly preferred.
Training in Wellness Self-Management and/ or WRAP strongly preferred.
A self-identified current or former user of mental health or co-occurring services who is in recovery, and can relate to others who are now using those services.
Ability to establish trusting relationship with peers and model community integration and independence.
Commitment to recovery, choice, empowerment, and the ability of people with serious mental illness or co-occurring disorders to find meaningful lives in the community.
Actively engaged in one’s community (outside of one’s residence/ program), familiar and comfortable with accessing community resources.
Experience working in behavioral health preferred.
Bi-lingual a plus.
H.S. Diploma or GED required.
Basic computer skills, including Microsoft Work and Microsoft Outlook.
Must be willing and able to travel via public transportation within Philadelphia.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
The Peer Facilitator’s duties require that he or she be able to do the following:
-Sit for at least two hours at a time
-Walk up to 5 city blocks
-Navigate public transportation
