PCCY Forum: America’s Working Families
Posted by on January 16, 2004
Can working families ever win? And ? if they did ? could the nation afford it?
The collision between work and family obligations in 21st century life will be the focus of a public forum and discussion Thursday evening at the National Constitution Center, sponsored by Philadelphia Citizens for Children and Youth, the region?s leading child advocacy organization.
The forum, ?The Widening Gap: Why America?s Working Families Are In Jeopardy and What Can Be Done About It,? is named for a book by guest speaker Dr. Jody Heymann of the Harvard School of Public Health, who has conducted extensive research on work and family issues.
Responding to Heymann will be local civic leader and retired banker Richard Smoot. Long involved in child and education issues in Philadelphia, he currently chairs the boards of both the Philadelphia Orchestra and the Settlement Music School PCCY?s Forging the Future Forum series aims to explore fresh ideas and policies to improve the status of children and families in Philadelphia and Pennsylvania.
We want to engage Philadelphians in a dialogue about the future of the city, the region and the Commonwealth,? says PCCY Executive Director Shelly Yanoff. ?Finding better ways to meet the needs of children and families is essential if we want to keep people from leaving town ? and make our community an attractive place to live, work, to raise a family in the 21st century.?
