Bread & Roses Community Fund
Part-Time Outreach Assistant
Bread & Roses Community Fund seeks a part-time Outreach Assistant for the fall from mid-September to mid-January to coordinate outreach for the Jonathan Lax Scholarship program.
In 1994, Jonathan Lax set up an educational trust to provide scholarships for gay men to attend accredited colleges, graduate and professional schools. Its purpose is to encourage gay men to obtain higher education, aspire to positions in which they may contribute to society, be open about their sexual orientation, and act as role modes for other gay men with similar potential.
The role of the Outreach Assistant is critical for the success of this program. The Outreach Assistant is responsible for developing a strong pool of applicants, sustaining relationships with area schools, universities, and community centers, and ensuring efficiency throughout the application process. Specific duties include:
? Using phone and face-to-face outreach to disseminate information to public and private high schools, guidance counselors, university groups, and community centers throughout the Delaware Valley.
? Scheduling speaking engagements and making presentations about the program to groups at schools and community centers.
? Publicizing the program through ads, flyers, and posters at venues that attract potential applicants, especially gay men.
? Intaking and sorting applications, and corresponding with applicants to ensure complete information.
? Assisting in the coordination of a reception for last year?s scholarship recipients
Applicants should have excellent communication skills, be comfortable working independently, and be extremely organized. Applicants should also be knowledgeable about the gay men?s community and target venues in the Philadelphia and surrounding area. Gay men are encouraged to apply.
The Outreach Assistant position requires an average commitment of 10 hours/week with occasional evening and weekend hours and heavier periods in October and December. Compensation range is $10-$12 per hour. Work-study students are eligible and encouraged to apply.
