Seeking Part-time Organizer for
David v. Goliath Corporate Accountability Campaign!

The Philadelphia Grassroots Cable Coalition seeks part-time media justice organizer to support its campaign to hold Comcast accountable to local communities, especially here in its own hometown.

From skyrocketing cable rates to lack of job security for cable workers, and threats to open and democratic Internet and public access facilities, people have more reasons to be concerned about the cable monopoly operating in their communities.

As the nation’s largest cable operator and pacesetter for the industry, Comcast has a responsibility to set a positive example in meeting its public interest obligations. So far, it has not been proactive in defining or fulfilling a high standard of public service or accountability. They can and must do better.

This is a unique opportunity for an experienced organizer to participate in a cutting-edge campaign where local cross-sector organizing is helping to define and build the field for media justice work nationally. Coordinate with local steering committee and national allies to advance campaign goals, research and guide strategies, act as spokesperson, outreach to new communities.

Flexible position is part-time for one year with the possibility of extension. Pay rate $10+/hour depending on experience and effectiveness; opportunity for increase. Estimated 10-15 hours per week, as needed. Great for someone interested in grassroots organizing, public interest law and/or policy, community media, media reform, social justice.

Responsibilities:

Develop and implement strategies
Outreach to community groups and leaders
Coordinate events
Convene meetings
Serve as campaign spokesperson
Conduct Press work
Draft written materials as needed (flyers, articles, press releases, etc.)
Manage all phone and online communications
Oversee email and website updates
Maintain database
Assist with fundraising
Help with general office/admin duties

Qualifications:

High school graduate
Previous organizing experience
Computer proficiency (MAC preferred) – Microsoft Office, Filemaker Pro, Photoshop
Web/tech skills
Organized and detail-oriented
Self-assured and professional attitude
Excellent communication skills (writing, phone manner)
Comfort with public speaking (to community groups and the press)
Reliable and self-motivated; able to complete tasks independently
Good interpersonal skills, ability to work with and motivate a wide range of people
Enthusiastic, able to learn quickly and "hit the ground running"
Commitment to social, racial, and economic justice

Other desirable strengths:
In addition to the requirements listed above, the ideal candidate will also possess some or all of the following knowledge/abilities:
? Graphic/web design/administration/programming
? Grantwriting or other fundraising
? Experience in non-profit setting
? Familiarity with Philadelphia communities, local politics
? Background knowledge of labor, consumer or media justice issues
? A good sense of humor!
