What is Mastery Charter’s Career Day?

Mastery Charter’s Annual Career Day is intended to extend the tremendous growth and learning of our internship students to the underclassmen. Career Day serves to expose our younger students to the multitude of career opportunities available and to educate them about the skills necessary for success. Guest panelists from 16 different industry categories will provide background and information about their lines of work, representing more than 75 diverse career options. In addition to attending these panels, each student may participate in a career development workshop led by Student Ambassadors. Student Ambassadors will also serve as facilitators of the panel discussions.

How can I get involved with Career Day?

We need industry representatives from all fields to serve as panelists and to speak about their educational background, career path, and field of work as well as answer questions from students about the professional world.

How will Career Day Work?

Panelists will participate in four 45-minute panel sessions with 4-5 other professionals in their industry category. Career Day will begin with a networking breakfast for all panelists in our cafeteria and then panelists will begin their series of panels. Each panel will be led by a student ambassador, who will ask each panelist to introduce themselves and talk briefly (2-3 minutes) about their educational and career background.

After each panelist has introduced him/herself, the student ambassador will facilitate a question-and-answer session, where students attending the panel will ask questions of the panelists. Panelists are invited to bring supporting materials (i.e. business cards, flyers, etc) but are not expected to do so.

What will I need to do?

We ask panelists to spend about 2-3 minutes at the start of each session explaining their current position, training and career backgrounds, and insight into the requirements for success in their fields. Our student ambassadors will lead each panel session. All panelists will be provided with materials prior to Career Day with suggestions for talking points. After all panelists have spoken, the floor will be opened up for questions from students. Roughly 30 students will attend each panel session.

Additionally, each panelist will be asked to provide a brief biographical paragraph for inclusion in the Career Day program.

What is the schedule for Career Day?

Career Day is Friday, May 14, 2010. The day for panelists will start with a networking breakfast from 8:00am-8:30am. All panelists will need to arrive by 8:30am and will be finished by 12:15pm. The four 45-minute periods will be separated by five minute exchange periods.
