STATEMENT OF DUTIES:
The incumbent serves as the Lead Outdoor Recreation Planner at the John Heinz National Wildlife Refuge at Tinicum. Located in Philadelphia and Delaware counties in Southeastern Pennsylvania, the 1,200 acre refuge protects Pennsylvania’s last remaining freshwater tidal marsh. The refuge has a large public use and environmental education program, with over 120,000 visitors every year. The refuge recently completed construction of Phase 1 of the Cusano Environmental Education Center, featuring: recycled materials; environmental exhibits; on-site waste water treatment greenhouse; classrooms; and community meeting space.
The Lead Outdoor Recreation Planner is responsible for directing the day-to-day public use activities at the refuge and the Cusano Environmental Education Center, including: supervising and training a staff of five refuge employees and a large volunteer corps; planning, operating and evaluating short- and long-term public use and environmental education programs; and ensuring that exhibits, signs, interpretive materials and other public use facilities are correct, current, in good condition and safe. The lead incumbent coordinates and develops ppartnerships with local school systems, colleges and universities, community groups, non-governmental organization’s, and state and Federal agencies to advance environmental education efforts on and off the refuge.
