Online Session: Diversity and Equity in Service-Learning
Posted by on May 21, 2007
The fifth online ?Sage Session? of the Service-Learning Young Professionals Network (SLYPN) will be May 23 at 2 PM EST. Wokie Weah, Vice President of the National Youth Leadership Council, will share her expertise and insights on diversity and equity work in the service-learning field. This discussion will reflect Wokie’s collaborative work with Dr. Verna Price and Dr Pamela Toole. In the report, "Missionary Ideology", they researched the following questions: 1. What implicit and explicit assumptions and beliefs underlie notions around "server" and "served"? 2. Can service-learning be used to unintentionally create discomfort between the server and those being served? 3. Can service-learning be used as a vehicle to transform stereotypical or prejudicial attitudes? Likewise, can service-learning be used to reinforce stereotypical or prejudicial attitudes?
