Online 3D Printing and STEM Tools

September 15, 2015
10:00 AM – 11:00 AM EDT

3D printing, which is the process of making of a three-dimensional object using a digital 3D file, is changing the world. Every industry, from food to aerospace, is impacted by 3D printing and students can now develop skills in this area as the technology is becoming more accessible. In the classroom, 3D printing is important because it can be used as an educational tool to teach STEAM subjects as well as foster a “maker culture” where students can learn by doing. Even if an afterschool program does not have a 3D printer, many libraries can provide the printing for them, making this technology accessible for programs on a tight budget.

In this introductory webinar, participants will explore the universe of 3D printing, including learning about 3D printers, 3D modeling, materials, printing services, the maker movement and much more. We will also demonstrate Morphi (http://www.morphiapp.com), a new 3D modeling application for iPad and iPad mini, where students of all ages and skill levels can create 3D objects on the go using touch, without Wi-Fi or a mouse. The application is a design tool that can be used with or without a 3D printer.

Presented by:

Stan Silverman, Chairman of the Technology Committee for the state of New York Teacher Centers

Bob Levy, Board Member of the Professor Garfield Foundation

Sophia Georgiou, CEO of the Inventery, a 3D printing software company

Miki Hamstra, Director for Center for Gifted Studies and Talent Development at Ball State University and STEM advisor for the Indiana After School Network
