Orphan Train selected as One Book, One Philadelphia novel
One Book, One Philadelphia is a nonprofit founded by the Mayor’s Office and the Free Library of Philadelphia in 2003 to promote reading, literacy and community building, bringing Philadelphians together through reading.
Each year, One Book, One Philadelphia chooses a novel that will be featured in art instillations, films, performances and discussion groups throughout the city.
This year, the organization has selected Orphan Train, a novel by Christina Baker Kline. The novel discusses “orphan trains” that were used to transport thousands of orphaned children living in cities to the rural Midwest and sheds light on the importance of memory and heritage in defining a person.
Each year, One Book, One Philadelphia brings more than 100,000 participants to over 100 events focusing on that year’s novel. Join the Free Library of Philadelphia and the Mayor’s Office Thursday, January 22nd for the 2015 One Book, One Philadelphia kick-off celebration featuring author Christina Baker Kline at Parkway Central’s Montgomery Auditorium at 7:30 pm.
