Nutrition Science Research Award
Call for Proposals 2014

The Sackler Institute for Nutrition Science at the New York Academy of Sciences is now accepting applications for its annual nutrition science research award.

Through this award, the Sackler Institute provides grants to researchers or research teams affiliated with a university or institution to carry out research related to ‘A Global Research Agenda for Nutrition Science’, developed by the Sackler Institute in collaboration with WHO and other global partners (please visit http://www.nutritionresearchagenda.org).

Topics of Interest
This year’s grant focuses on exploring the nutritional status of adolescent women in the United States and globally, in contexts with high levels of deficiencies, stunting, obesity or a combination of these. Proposals should consider the following issues:

  • Nutritional status and determinants of a healthy diet and food choice among adolescent women, including how health-seeking and risk-taking behaviors influence attitudes towards food. Addressing the notion of empowerment in decision-making processes is of particular interest.
  • Nutritional factors affecting growth trajectory and growth faltering in adolescence, especially in vulnerable populations, including mechanistic studies exploring weight change and growth.
  • Iron deficiency anemia in adolescent women
  • Mechanistic studies looking at specific nutrient deficiencies during puberty and adolescence.
  • Identification of best timing/windows and channels for successful interventions and nutrition behavior change targeted at adolescents, with a focus on the role of technology.
