Nonprofit Sector Research Fund Announces New Grants Program
Deadline: November 5, 2004

The Nonprofit Sector Research Fund (<a href="http://nonprofitresearch.org/">http://nonprofitresearch.org/</a>) at the Aspen Institute is accepting research proposals that seek to improve understanding of unrestricted awards by foundations and their funding of nonprofit overhead.

For the purposes of this RFP, the term "overhead" refers to expenses that relate to the overall administration and management of an organization, including fundraising. "Unrestricted" support, also known as "core" or "general operating" support, describes funding given, generally with no strings attached, for a nonprofit to use in whatever ways will benefit the organization, including day-to-day administrative costs. In contrast, "project" or "program" support denotes grants to support specific projects or program services.

Proposals for this program must demonstrate how the research will go beyond existing work to contribute to a deeper understanding of the issues identified in the proposal. Strong consideration will be given to projects that have the potential to contribute to improved practice or policy, either in the short or long term. In addition, projects should have a specific plan to disseminate results widely to foundation and nonprofit leaders and scholars through the highest-quality trade, scholarly, and popular journals, conference presentations, and other communications vehicles.

Funding of up to approximately $300,000 is available through this program. Grants generally will range from $10,000 to $125,000, and proposals are invited at all funding levels.

Grants will be awarded to institutions and individuals. Proposals from university-based researchers, independent scholars, nonprofit practitioners, and other researchers are welcome.

See the NSRF Web site for program guidelines and application materials.
