Nominations sought for PennSERVE Youth Board
Posted by on March 26, 2007
National & Global Youth Service Day (N&GYSD) is quickly approaching and will be celebrated this year from April 20 through April 22, 2007. N&GYSD is recognized as the largest service event in the world, and has become a tradition that recognizes and rewards young people for making positive contributions to their communities. This year?s theme will be:
N & GYSD 2007 = YOUTH CHANGING THE WORLD!
We are encouraging all colleges and universities in Pennsylvania to take this opportunity to promote service projects among their students, while also highlighting the ongoing community service endeavors in which these young adults are involved.
According to Youth Service America, millions of youth participated in National and Global Youth Service Day 2006, by tutoring younger children, providing nutrition education, and meeting a multitude of community needs through service activities. The ultimate aim is to create a culture of engaged youth who are committed to a lifetime of service, learning, leadership, and achievement.
Toward that end, National and Global Youth Service Day presents an opportunity to support youth on a lifelong path of service and civic engagement, and to educate the public, the media and elected officials about the role of young people as community leaders.
In honor of National & Global Youth Service Day, PennSERVE seeks your assistance in identifying high school and college or university students worthy of appointment by Governor Rendell as a representative on the Pennsylvania Community Service Advisory Board. This young person, having shown a commitment to positive social change, will be a valuable resource on our Board to speak for all of Pennsylvania?s youth.
An example of the varied contributions of our current youth ambassadors for service is the DO 52! Program inaugurated by PennSERVE?s Youth Advisory Council. Information can be found on the homepage of our website at http://www.pennserve.state.pa.us. We highly encourage you to support this initiative, and even suggest that N&GYSD may present just the right opportunity to launch your DO 52! campaign.
Please contact the PennSERVE office for a Nomination Form to enable you to submit the name of a high school or college or university student (who will not be graduating this year), who truly makes a difference in his or her school, community, place of employment, or place of worship. The deadline for submissions will be Friday, May 11, 2007.
Thank you very much for your commitment to community service and to the young people of Pennsylvania.
