Nominations Invited for 2012 National Medal for Museum and Library Community Service
Deadline: December 15, 2011
The Institute of Museums and Library Services is inviting supporters of outstanding museums and libraries to nominate their favorite institutions for the National Medal for Museum and Library Service, the nation’s highest honor for exemplary museum and library community service.
The National Medal honors museums and libraries that make extraordinary civic, educational, economic, environmental, and social contributions. Selected institutions demonstrate extraordinary and innovative approaches to public service and exceed the expected levels of community outreach. These organizations have established themselves as community anchor institutions. The winners are honored at a National Medal award ceremony held in Washington, D.C.
Any individual, including a museum or library employee, may nominate a museum or library in the U.S. and its territories for the National Medal. Public or private nonprofit museums, including zoos, art, history, science and technology, children’s, and natural history museums; historic houses, nature centers, and botanical gardens; and all types of nonprofit libraries, including public, school, academic, research, and archival, are eligible to receive the honor.
Nominations should describe the population served and community needs; the institution’s programs, services, and partnerships; impact and evaluation of programs; and financial sustainability.
Complete program information and the nomination form are available at the IMLS Web site.
