FARM TO PEOPLE
NEW WEBSITE ANSWERS THE QUESTION: WHERE DOES OUR FOOD COME FROM?
Driven by a mission to promote transparency and ethics in our current food system, Farm to People (http://farmtopeople.com) is a new website dedicated to connecting, independent, sustainable farmers and “craft producers” with consumers.
Wild-Harvested Seaweed, Garden Grown Loofah, Gooseberry Vinegar, Heritage Pork, Raw Milk Cheeses and Dried Asian Pears are just a few of the many things consumers will discover as they browse through what co-founder Brant Shapiro calls, “The Etsy of Food.”
“It’s a not a traditional shopping website,” says Shapiro. “You are not going to be able to purchase all of the ingredients you need for a specific recipe or for your pantry. Instead, it’s like a ride through the country, or a visit to your farmer’s market, where you can purchase direct from the source. We don’t keep inventory or warehouse product. Everything ships from the farm. This is a site about creating a relationship between the grower, or producer and the eater.”
Every product listing has an in depth description as well as a link to the farm it comes from so that users can view photos, videos, information, and production techniques. Norwich Meadow Farms, from Norwich, NY has available on the site, a lineage certificate which provides the birth date, weaning weight, parents and grandparents of each cow it’s meat comes from. “You don’t get more transparent then that,” says Shapiro.
Farm To People’s founders David Robinov and Brant Shapiro, two veterans of the natural products industry, believe this online model will help raise awareness about current food issues. “Eaters can only make informed decisions if they know the entire story of where their food comes from. Food should not be the product of big business and laboratories. It’s only when people know the source of their food, and its means of production that there will hopefully be a shift towards something healthier, safer and better tasting!”
