Fairmount Water Works Interpretive Center Launches new website as part of U.N’s World Environment Day

Philadelphia, June 9, 2004 – The Fairmount Water Works Interpretive Center (FWWIC) today underscored its participation in the United Nations’ World Environment Day by launching the Center’s new website.

“As we observe World Environment Day, all of us must consider the impact of our actions on the environment, particularly on the watersheds,” said Ed Grusheski, general manager of public affairs for the Philadelphia Water Dept.

“Our website will help to do that, so we are pleased to launch our site on this special occasion,” he added.

Located at http://www.fairmountwaterworks.org, the website has all the information anyone might need before visiting the Center. Besides covering the basics of location, hours of operation and driving directions, the new website offers, among many other things:

* Compelling evidence on the importance of watersheds
* A brief history of the Fairmount Water Works
* Colorful photos of the FWWIC’s exhibits
* Concise descriptions of other cultural institutions within walking distance
* Directions on how to volunteer at or donate to the Interpretive Center
* Links to websites for the Philadelphia Water Department, FWWIC Partners and other water-related organizations

Although this year’s World Environment Day focuses on the challenges confronting Earth’s seas and oceans, water pollution provides a common concern for the U.N. and the Interpretive Center. The FWWIC’s main them of “Water in our World” specifically addresses pollution caused by watershed runoff into rivers that, if not stopped, ultimately affects water quality in our seas and oceans.

The new site was designed by Talisman Interactive, the Philadelphia-based firm also responsible for the Center’s digital exhibits and feature film.

Admission to the Interpretive Center is free and the facility is 100 per cent ADA accessible. The Fairmount Water Works Interpretive Center is a project of the Philadelphia Water Department.
