A FOCUS ON VOCABULARY
Pacific Resources for Education and Learning offers A Focus on Vocabulary, a free online resource on vocabulary development for young children. This booklet, which bridges research and practice, begins with a definition of vocabulary and explores the following issues of vocabulary development: why vocabulary is important in reading comprehension, what “knowing” a word means, key instructional strategies, and issues related to vocabulary development for English language learners (ELLs). The booklet is written by Ms. Fran Lehr, Ms. Jean Osborn, and Dr. Elfrieda Hiebert. Lehr and Osborn are known for their writing, which elaborates on scholarly work by providing explanatory information and examples to clarify the classroom implications and applications of that research.
