New Summer Opportunity: Sustainable Global Leadership Alliance

Action for a sustainable future!

First, what is sustainability? A working definition is easy: living today without undermining the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. Determining what a sustainable human presence on earth would look is the urgent task facing humanity.

A new program just launched in the Delaware Valley, the Sustainable Global Leadership Alliance (SGLA), grapples not only with defining sustainability and raising awareness of the urgency of the task but, more importantly, how to prepare the next generation of leaders to take on that task. SGLA starts from the premise that the most promising path to a sustainable future is via a diverse population of youth deeply exploring – from as many perspectives as possible – ecological, social justice and economic considerations.

?One of the most powerful forces for good in the world is the latent idealism of young people,? said SGLA Executive Director Evan Hough. ?If we can unleash this force across the spectrum of culture, ethnicity and socio-economic circumstances, and connect our teens with the joy of contributing to their human family, humanity?s prospects improve exponentially. SGLA seeks to equip youth 17-22 years old with the tools and capabilities to build diverse alliances and take effective action.?

SGLA seeks to accomplish this via core leadership and sustainability training in five intensive weekend workshops and three weeks of service work in a developing country. Participants engage in an open-ended, lifetime inquiry into ?what is sustainability?,? lead a simulated society, participate in a powerful breakthrough communication intensive and spend three weeks exploring and engaging in service work in northern India. The SGLA program challenges young people to assert their leadership NOW to create a sustainable future. Workshops and travel experiences are the foundation for development and implementation of Sustainable Community Projects that reflect each program participants? personal interests.
