New Resource: community organizing archive

Loyola Marymount University, in Los Angeles, California, is pleased to announce that its Center for the Study of Los Angeles Research Collection now has available two documentary collections on the history of community organizing in the United States. The Thomas A. Gaudette Papers (CSLA-18) consist of the materials that this major figure in community organizing collected during his forty year career in the field and document his work in the field as well as that of various community organizing groups. These materials include newspaper clippings, magazine and journal articles, book reviews, correspondence, conference materials, community organization flyers, brochures, newsletters, and annual reports. Other holdings consist of photographs, videotapes, and audio cassette tapes. The chronological span of the holdings is from 1938 to 1996, with the majority of the materials found after 1960. The other collection related to community organizing is the PICO Collection: William F. Masterson Papers (CSLA-19). The materials in this collection come from the work of William F. Masterson for the Pacific Institute for Community Organization, a leader in the field of community organizing under the leadership of John Baumann, S.J. The materials in this collection cover the growth of various PICO organizing projects throughout the United States, as well as the internal growth and working of PICO in the 1980s and 1990s.
