New Report: Voting on Campus: Student-Centered Solutions to Build Election Resiliency

Posted by Brennan Center for Justice on August 27, 2024

The Brennan Center for Justice has just released a new report, Voting on Campus: Student-Centered Solutions to Build Election Resiliency, that examines the unique obstacles that college students face when voting.

With many college students heading to the polls this fall, this resource offers recommendations for how election officials, working with college stakeholders, can prevent disruptions at campus voting locations and ensure students can cast their ballots and have their votes counted. These recommendations are informed by conversations with election officials who serve college communities across various states and input from college students themselves.

The new report discusses three essential aspects of election planning:

  • How election officials can collaborate with campus stakeholders to guarantee that students have the information they need to register and vote;
  • How election officials can select and prepare polling places to ensure campus communities have accessible and secure voting options; and
  • How election officials can manage polling places to avoid long lines.

The report builds on the ongoing work of the Brennan Center’s Elections & Government Program identifying best practices to help election officials respond to disruptions and ensure every voter can cast a ballot and have their vote counted. It aims to not only guide election officials in their planning but also help student communities better understand the important efforts involved in election administration.

Please feel free to pass this report along with any partners, colleagues, or others who might find it valuable. If you have any questions, comments, or would like to discuss the report further, please contact the report authors: Derek Tisler ([email protected]), Marina Pino ([email protected]), and Jiyoon Park ([email protected]).
