New Report: Two Pandemics: Racial Disparities in Basic Needs Insecurity Among College Students During the COVID-19 Pandemic
Posted by The Hope Center on November 7, 2023
Higher education has historically excluded and intentionally marginalized Black, Brown and other non-White populations. The COVID-19 pandemic heightened these deep inequities by disproportionally impacting basic needs insecurity for students from systemically marginalized racial and ethnic backgrounds.
Our new report uses data from the 2020 Student Basic Needs Survey to explore how students’ college experiences during the pandemic varied by race and ethnicity. Our fantastic research partners specifically looked at students’ basic needs security, including their mental health, access to technology, and use of campus and public supports.
