State of the City
The Philadelphia Research Initiative of the Pew Charitable Trusts recently released a new and comprehensive report entitled “Philadelphia 2009: The State of the City” that depicts our city as making progress in many areas, yet still struggling with forces that can lead to serious decline unless they are dealt with now. According to the press release accompanying the report, “… through lively and accessible graphics, the report examines the city’s strengths and weaknesses, its sources for hope and reasons for concern, and highlights key indicators that can be used to gauge changes in the city from this point forward.” Larry Eichel, project director of the Philadelphia Research Initiative, states “Our hope is that the wealth of relevant facts in this report will assist policy makers, opinion leaders and concerned citizens as they try to address the city’s problems and reinforce its strengths.” The report shows a complex and nuanced city where every major policy decision can impact the quality of life for its citizens for many years to come.
