This week USDA released their most recent report on domestic food security, Household Food Security in the United States, 2005. According to the report, the number of Americans struggling with hunger and food insecurity has decreased. Nationally food insecurity decreased from 11.9% (38 million Americans) to 11% (35 million Americans). For the first time in four years, we also see the improvement in Pennsylvania: food insecurity dropped from 10.2% (2004 data) to 9.8% (2005 data)! This positive shift is a reflection of a strong economy and increased enrollment in the food stamp program.
