New Report: New Jersey Keeping Families Together

New Jersey’s Keeping Families Together (KFT) is a supportive housing program administered by the Department of Community Affairs (DCA), for families experiencing housing instability, homelessness, and child welfare problems. The Urban Institute recently evaluated the program, and interviewed participating families about their experiences, outcomes, continued challenges, and the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic. KFT’s goals include family preservation and stabilization, family reunification, child welfare case closure, improved child and family well-being, and housing stability. Many of the families were able to utilize the provided housing and mental health services, which resulted in less anxiety for parents and stronger parent-child relationships. There was a general satisfaction and feeling of safeness throughout the group, based on their new neighborhoods and housing. Though the program had a positive impact on the families, obstacles such as the lack of available employment and maintaining housing affordability without the voucher remained.
