New Professional Science Master’s in Sustainability, Temple University
Posted by Temple University on November 4, 2025
Temple University’s Professional Science Master’s (PSM) in Sustainability is a first-of-its kind graduate program created through a collaborative effort between the College of Liberal Arts and the College of Science and Technology. Designed to meet the complex challenges of our time, the program provides interdisciplinary training across departments, preparing graduates to lead in sectors where cross-disciplinary expertise is crucial.
This collaborative spirit is centered in the program curriculum, which focuses on transformational change by exploring the natural, technological, and socioeconomic systems that shape sustainability. This foundation is laid with our core course- Fundamentals of Sustainability Science and Environmental Justice (FOSSE).
Uniquely co-taught by Program Co-Directors Dr. Amelia Duffy-Tumasz (Department of Geography, Environment, and Urban Studies) and Dr. Rob Jennings (Department of Biology), FOSSE introduces students to real-world sustainability challenges through a systems-thinking lens grounded in empirical scientific methods. The course integrates natural and physical science- such as biology, geology, and data analysis- with critical perspectives from the social sciences- including geography, urban studies, environmental studies, and public policy.
Discover how Temple’s PSM or Graduate Certificate in Sustainability can prepare you to meet the demand for professionals who integrate sustainability principles across industries.
