Warren Haggstrom’s paper, “The Power Bind,” has been added to the Congregational (Faith-Based) & Community Organizing Resources page (http://www.gatherthepeople.org/Pages/DLresources.htm) on the Gather the People web site.
The paper may be of interest to organizers, trainers, and educators: it’s an important (although one-sided) account of what happened in the 1960s with the Community Action Training Center at Syracuse University,
and the role of the OEO in those events; and it has a valuable contemporary lesson to teach about the “power bind.”
The paper includes a brief biographical sketch of Warren that was written after his death in 1986 by three UCLA School of Social Welfare faculty members.
I have taken the liberty, as a former student, colleague, and editor of Warren’s, of lightly editing the paper.
