Below is the announcement of the online version by Kris Tjerandsen Smith, who also did the copyediting on the web version. I also want to personally thank Carl and Kris for allowing COMM-ORG to provide a home for this important work, which is one of the most comprehensive analyses of community organizing available.

Education for Citizenship analyzes projects designed to change ways of thinking, feeling and acting in the pursuit of the upbuilding and betterment of American citizenship. All of the projects were funded by the Emil Schwartzhaupt Foundation, and almost all of the grants were made between 1953 and 1962.

The projects were managed by organizations such as the Industrial Areas Foundation, Highlander Folk School, Arrow, Inc., National Conference of Catholic Charities, Migrant Ministry, American Council for Emigres in the Professions; 4-H Clubs, Encampment for Citizenship and almost 50 other organizations.

The analyses point out the barriers to success, how those barriers were overcome–or were not overcome–and why. Some of the source material draws on personal conversations between the author and many of the principle organizers: Myles Horton, Septima Clark, Esau Jenkins, Saul Alinsky, Fred Ross, Cesar
Chavez, Nicholas von Hoffman, D?Arcy McNickle and many others.

The book was published in 1980 and is out-of-print. Because there continues to be interest in the work accomplished by the funded projects and in the assesment of their success, the book is now available on the Comm-Org website. The author will be interested to read any comments or discussion the book might generate.
