New Issue of Metropolitan Universities – Urban and Metropolitan Universities: The Transformative Power of Anchor Institutions
Posted by Metropolitan Universities journal on February 19, 2019
The current issue of Metropolitan Universities, Vol 30 No 1 (2019): Urban and Metropolitan Universities: The Transformative Power of Anchor Institutions, focuses on the role of urban and metropolitan universities as anchor institutions in their community to address long standing inequities. Anchor institutions are nonprofit or public institutions that are rooted in place. These institutions have a mission to serve and are the largest employers and purchaser of goods and services in many communities. Also, they have other assets and capacities that can be leveraged to support reciprocal community development, including local hiring, procurement, and investment practices. Anchor mission strategies involve the entire university, including the business, community partnership, administrative, research and academic divisions.
This issue is an outcome of the Coalition of Urban and Metropolitan University’s (CUMU) ongoing partnership with The Democracy Collaborative. Authors include representatives from institutions participating in the pilot year of the CUMU-TDC Higher Education Anchor Mission Initiative, which allows CUMU members to more quickly adopt an anchor mission and guide development of best practices. Articles in the issue focus on the role of urban and metropolitan universities as anchor institutions in their community to address long standing inequities and highlight key work and critical reflection from across this expanding field of practice.
