New Guide: Establishing Apprenticeship Programs for Youth Workers

Posted by on April 23, 2004

Dear Colleagues,

The National Training Institute for Community Youth Work (NTI) at the Academy for Educational Development (AED) in Washington, D.C. is please to announce its most recent publication, Establishing Apprenticeship Programs for Youth Workers: A Planning Guide.

Funded by the US Department of Labor, the guide draws upon the experience of NTI in establishing Youth Development Practitioner Apprenticeship (YDPA) programs for youth workers in Hampton/Newport News, VA; Kansas City, MO; New York, NY; and Springfield, MA.

We hope the Guide’s insights about “what it takes” to train youth workers through the apprenticeship system are applicable to a broad audience of leaders in the youth development field.

NTI convenes and supports a 23-city national network of organizations that are Building Exemplary Systems for Training Youth Workers (BEST). The national BEST network trains approximately 1,500 youth workers annually in foundational youth development concepts and practices through community-based trainings, college courses, apprenticeship programs, and professional networking opportunities. To date, approximately 9,000 youth workers have been trained by BEST systems.

To receive a free downloadable copy of the Planning Guide, visit NTI’s web site at: http://www.nti.aed.org
