Civil Rights Update
The Leadership Conference on Civil Rights (LCCR) has released a new report card examining key votes in the first session of the 108th Congress. The report card indicates that bipartisan support for protecting civil rights has strongly eroded. “In the over 30 years that LCCR has issued its civil rights scorecard on congressional votes, we have not witnessed such a lack of bipartisanship on civil rights,” said deputy Director Nancy Zirkin, noting that “the protection of civil rights and civil liberties should be a paramount moral value in our democracy.” These developments coincide with the launch of LCCR’s Rekindle the Dream campaign. The new, year-long campaign will include a legislative effort to restore civil rights protections that have been lost as a result of recent Supreme Court decisions, and a multi-state endeavor to ensure fair implementation of the Help America Vote Act.
