The Census Bureau recently released its annual report about poverty, income, and health insurance coverage. Analysts were startled to see poverty rise by 1.1 million people from 2003 to 2004, despite some indicators of economic growth during that period. The number of people without health insurance also rose, from 45 million in 2003 to 45.8 million in 2004. As the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities has noted, poverty and lack of health insurance have been growing worse since 2000.
