New Approaches to Social Justice Activism

The Bread & Roses Community Fund/Future Fund
<a href="http://www.breadrosesfund.org/grants/general.html">http://www.breadrosesfund.org/grants/general.html</a> supports social justice advocacy organizations in the Delaware Valley of Pa. and NJ.
Deadline: Dec. 31, 2005.

The Future Fund supports organizations that are working on emerging issues or developing new approaches to social justice activism. These groups may employ one or more effective strategies, such as cultural work, media advocacy, or political education. Grant size: $2,000 – $6,000.

Who is Eligible?

* Organizations must be located in the Delaware Valley, which includes five Pennsylvania counties (Philadelphia, Bucks, Chester, Delaware and Montgomery) and Camden County, New Jersey.
* Organizations with total operating budgets of less than $150,000 are eligible to apply.
* Those with total budgets of more than $150,000 may apply if they have a discrete social justice project with a budget of less than $150,000 that a) needs seed money for a new activity, or b) is unlikely to meet the guidelines of other funding sources because of its goals or strategies.
* Organizations must be tax-exempt, have a fiscal sponsor with tax-exempt status, or be awaiting a decision by the IRS on its 501(c)(3) application.
* Organizations must have have submitted progress reports from all previously awarded grants. Failure to do so will disqualify organizations from future funding.
* Organization’s leadership must reflect the people that the organization serves.
* Priority is given to organizations that are actively working against racism.
* Organizations must have a pro-active, long-term vision and strategy for social change that promotes racial and economic justice.

Bread & Roses defines *social change* as working to redistribute wealth, power and resources and to eliminate the barriers that keep people from participating fully in society. For Bread & Roses, social change means focusing on efforts on changing the circumstances and social and institutional systems that create barriers and inequalities.
