2017 Need for LIVE STEM Demonstrators
Who We Are:
At United Way, we believe there is no better investment than Education and we see it as a community responsibility. It takes all of us – parents, teachers and caring adults – to help a child succeed in school and in life. United Way fights for successful youth by providing access to high-quality learning opportunities that lead to stable career pipelines and pathways – work we’re advancing by supporting Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) opportunities.
The Need:
According to the National Science Foundation, 80 percent of jobs created in the next decade will require math and science skills. Ensuring that all students have access to high-quality learning opportunities in STEM subjects and career paths is a matter of necessity and a priority for a sustainable future.
Day of Caring Signature Site:
On Saturday, October 14, United Way will team up with the Philadelphia AFL-CIO and the School District of Philadelphia to equip eighth grade classrooms with high-impact STEM activity kits to support the District’s new science curriculum. We’re also putting on a science fun fair for families to explore STEM together and get a hands-on introduction to STEM-related career paths.
We Need Your Help!
United Way is searching for volunteers to lead STEM based activities during our Day of Caring Signature Site event. Our goal is to provide a forum for families to explore STEM career paths, develop curious minds and serve their community together. Volunteer roles include:
SCIENCE DEMONSTRATORS
Create curiosity. Create passion. Create an opportunity for students in K-12 Grade to push the limits of what they can do by encourage experimenting, tinkering, building, observing, exploring, and problem solving.
CAREER EDUCATORS
Do you work in a STEM field and absolutely love what you do? Share your love with students! We are seeking career exhibitors who can also provide hands on activities, demonstrations or bringing in examples of the things they work on for kids to see and touch.
As a community, we can give all children the opportunity to be college-ready and to thrive in a modern STEM economy. Join us!
