National Society for Experiential Education Northeast Regional Workshop

I wanted to share with you information below on three seminars presented by the National Society of Experiential Education ? EE Academy which will be hosted on the University of New Haven campus Monday June 11, Tuesday June 12, and Wednesday June 13.

MONDAY, June 11, 2007: 9:00 am – 3:00 PM

Strengthening Experiential Education Within Your Institution, Karen Roloff, DePaul University

This workshop addresses seven critical factors that need initial and ongoing attention: mission and values; curricular integration; faculty involvement; quality assurance and assessment; administrative infrastructure; budget integration; and strategies for change. Karen M. Roloff, is a professor in the Department of Communication at DePaul University in Chicago and she directs the communication internship program. She served on the task force that created the university internship program, necessitated by the institution of an experiential learning requirement and continues to serve on the experiential learning committee which approves and assesses all courses meeting the experiential learning requirement. She currently serves on the NSEE Board of Directors.

TUESDAY, June 12, 2007: 9:00 AM ? 3:00 PM

Service-Learning, Civic Engagement & Experiential Education, Garry Hesser, Augsburg College

This workshop focuses on course-embedded service-learning, complemented by participatory action research, internships, work-study, and co-curricular campus-community collaboration as significant ways to enhance the educational experience, meet higher education objectives, and mobilize resources for and strengthen community partnerships. Garry Hesser, is Professor of Sociology and Urban Studies and served as Chair of the Natural and Social Sciences Division [1996-current] at Augsburg College in Minneapolis. He is past president of the National Society for Experiential Education (NSEE) and the Higher Education Consortium for Urban Affairs (HECUA). As a member of the Campus Compact-AAHE Consulting Corps, he has led workshops on service-learning and experiential education.

WEDNESDAY, June 13, 2007: 9:00 am – 3:00 PM

Reflection: Key to Making the Experience Educational, Wayne Harvey, Linworth Alternative Program

While experiences are the first E in experiential education, it is through reflection that the learning takes its root and makes lasting changes. This workshop will explore methods of guiding students to be more reflective in their experiences and following their experiences: the use of journals in reflection and models for conducting regular seminars promoting reflection and reflective conversation. Wayne Harvey, is an educator with over 30 years of experience and an adjunct faculty member of Ashland University’s graduate school of education. He is currently the Teacher-Director of the Linworth Alternative Program in central Ohio. Wayne is currently a member of the NSEE Board of Directors.
