Applications Invited for Canon National Parks Science Scholars Program
Deadline: May 3, 2006
The Canon National Parks Science Scholars Program has announced its 2006 competition. The program, a collaboration among Canon U.S.A., Inc. (<a href="http://canon.com/">http://canon.com/</a>), the American Association for the Advancement of Science (<a href="http://aaas.org/">http://aaas.org/</a>), and the U.S. National Park Service (<a href="http://www.nature.nps.gov">http://www.nature.nps.gov</a>), awards scholarships to Ph.D. students throughout the Americas to conduct research critical to conserving the national parks of the region.
By providing support to Ph.D. students, the Canon National Parks Science Scholars Program hopes to develop the next generation of scientists working in the fields of conservation, environmental science, and national park management.
For this program, the Americas include Canada, the U.S. Mexico, the countries of Central and South America, and the countries of the Caribbean.
Awards are made in four categories, broadly defined: biological sciences (including such disciplines as botany, ecology, and conservation biology); physical sciences (including such disciplines as geology, hydrology, and atmospheric sciences); social/cultural sciences (including such disciplines as economics, sociology, anthropology, and archeology); and technology innovation in support of conservation science (including such fields as informatics, remote sensing, photomonitoring, and radiotelemetry).
The program will award eight scholarships based on two separate competitions: Four scholars will be selected from students studying at universities in the United States — one winner in each of the categories described above; and four scholars will be selected from students studying at universities throughout the Americas, but outside the U.S. — one winner in each of the categories described above. In addition, four Honorable Mentions will be selected from throughout all of the Americas.
Each winning student will be awarded a Canon National Parks Science Scholarship of $80,000.
The 2006 Application Guide is available at the National Park Service Web site.
