Description:
The Ms. Foundation for Women has supported girls and women?s safety since our inception?a time when women were just beginning to speak out loud about the violence in their lives, both at home and in the wider world. Over the past 30 years, we have worked diligently to draw attention to the prevalence of gender-based violence in our society, as we believe it is a core component of women?s continued inequality, severely limiting the options and opportunities in the lives of women and girls.

Today, through our Safety program, the Ms. Foundation leads the way in funding grassroots efforts to address gender violence and to create a violence-free society, focusing specifically on community accountability for women?s safety; transforming traditional gender roles to address violence while also engaging men in ending violence against women; and preventing child sexual abuse.

The Ms. Foundation for Women believes that violence is both socially constructed and preventable. We are working to help people in communities across the country increase their stake in ending violence by seizing the power we all hold to end this epidemic. Though a great deal has been done to assist the victims of violence through the creation of shelters and crisis programs in every state across the country, still, not a lot has changed in the ways in which women experience violence, or the frequency with which they experience it. To bring about the real change we seek, the Ms. Foundation?s approach to ending gender-based violence begins within the community?because we know that it is within communities that we build our core relationships and view of the world; it is within communities that lasting change takes place.

For the Ms. Foundation?s fiscal year 2007 safety grants, our efforts increasingly will be focused on the intersection of youth organizing movements and safety work.
