More Ways to Celebrate Juneteenth

Posted by Historical Society of Pennsylvania on June 17, 2025

Juneteenth commemorates June 19, 1865, the day when enslaved people in Galveston, Texas, finally learned of their freedom—more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was issued.

It is now celebrated as a day of reflection, resilience, and recognition of African American freedom and achievement in the United States. As a federal holiday, the Historical Society of Pennsylvania will be closed on Thursday, June 19.
