More than College Knowledge: Integrating Postsecondary Transitions Services into the Classroom

This workshop will explore the components of transitions services in LaGuardia Community College of the City University of New York Bridge to College and Careers Programs. During the workshop, participants will:
· Share existing transitions and advisement strategies with colleagues
· Explore academic and non-academic barriers to student success and learn how LaGuardia’s Bridge Program addresses these issues
· Identify key supports and program design features that contribute to successful postsecondary transitions
· Review Bridge Program transitions curriculum samples to identify opportunities for integrating advisement activities with academic skills development
· Explore student-facing mobile and web-based apps that simplify the financial aid application process
· Participate in a sample Bridge Program transitions activity to: a) identify what a college going culture looks like in an Adult Education classroom, b) what habits and routines support student success in college, and c) what learning objectives inform the design of college and career readiness materials for adult education and/or high school equivalency students.
About the Presenter:
Amy Dalsimer is the Director of the Pre College Academic Programming Department at LaGuardia Community College of the City University of New York. She directs a variety of adult literacy, workforce development, and college transition initiatives including the Bridge to Career and College Pathways Project and the integrated basic educational and career training programs designed for adult learners (NYBEST).
Wynne Ferdinand is the Assistant Director of Pre-College Academic Programming Department LaGuardia Community College. She supervises curriculum and program development and designs professional development materials for adult educators.
