15th Annual King Day of Service set for January 18th

Last January, 65,000 volunteers served in some 900 projects in the 14th annual Greater Philadelphia Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service, the first and still the largest King Day event in the nation. Since 1996, some 500,000 volunteers across the Southeastern Pennsylvania region have celebrated Dr. King’s legacy by turning their community concerns into volunteer service and ongoing citizen action on King Day and beyond.

The 15th annual Greater Philadelphia King Day of Service, to take place on Monday, January 18th, expects another tremendous expected turnout throughout Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Delaware.

This year’s event will also feature the 2nd King Day of Service Civic Engagement Expo, this year to be held from 9am to noon at Girard College, 2101 South College Avenue (Near Girard Avenue & Corinthian Street) in Philadelphia.

The King Day of Service will be formally launched with a press conference on Wednesday, January 6th, 10:45am at Girard College.  Highlights will include Mayor Michael Nutter announcing the winner of the 12th annual King Day of Service Harris Wofford Active Citizenship Award, the unveiling of a dramatic 36’x 5’ King Day of Service mural painted by students from area schools, and a performance by the Universal African Dance and Drum Ensemble.

The Greater Philadelphia King Day of Service is organized through Global Citizen, the non-profit organization founded in 1995 to promote and support sustainable civic engagement among people of all ages and backgrounds.

This past King Day, Global  Citizen launched MLK365, a year-round service program providing sustainable volunteer opportunities. The group has been working with partners to encourage and support ongoing civic engagement, using the King Day of Service as a springboard. Since its inception, MLK365 has been organizing monthly service opportunities and has been working with businesses to develop ongoing employee volunteer programs.

In order to help support community organizing efforts for January 18 and beyond, Global Citizen has updated its Project Development Kit, which aims to provide useful background information, new ideas for organizing King Day of Service projects, partnership building ideas, and ways to use King Day as a springboard for ongoing community involvement.
