The purpose of the MLK Day of Service Grants is to mobilize more Americans to observe the Martin Luther King, Jr. Federal Holiday as a day of service in communities and to bring people together around the common focus of service to others. To achieve this, depending upon appropriations provided by the Congress for the Corporation, we intend to disburse up to approximately $600,000 in grant funds to support approved service opportunities in conjunction with the Federal legal holiday honoring the birthday of Martin Luther King, Jr. on January 17, 2005. The Corporation will award 3-5 grants of a minimum $100,000 to eligible applicants who will in turn subgrant to eligible local organizations or fund separate events to plan and carry out at least 10 service project activities.
