Mishkan Shalom to Host Congressman Chaka Fattah

March 12, 2004
7:30 p.m

On Friday, March 12, Congressman Chaka Fattah will visit Congregation Mishkan Shalom to discuss his Student Bill of Rights and the unfinished business of Brown vs. the Board of Education.

Nearly 50 years after the United States Supreme Court in Brown v. Board of Education struck down “separate and unequal” schooling (May 17, 1954), millions of children still do not have access to the educational resources that are critical to student achievement, including highly qualified teachers, challenging curricula, up-to-date textbooks, school facilities, and others.

Congressman Chaka Fattah is the sponsor of the “Student Bill of Rights” legislation, which would hold states accountable for providing the fundamentals of educational opportunity to all students.

Come learn how Brown vs. the Board of Education continues to impact public education today, how far we have to go in Pennsylvania’s public schools to overcome the achievement and opportunity gaps, and how we can strengthen our advocacy to ensure every child has an equal opportunity to pursue a quality education.

Special guests include: Rev. Arthur White, Founding Council Member of Good Schools Pennsylvania and President of the Pennsylvania Baptist State Convention, and Rabbi George Stern, Founding Council Member of Good Schools Pennsylvania and Director of the Northwest Interfaith Movement.

All are welcome to attend the Shabbat service that begins at 7:30 p.m., or to come for the program only, which starts at 8:30 p.m.

Mishkan Shalom is located at 4101 Freeland Avenue (off of Shurs Lane in Roxborough). For information contact Janis Risch (215) 332-2700; (215) 681-6213.
