The team of leaders who successfully turned around Young Scholars Charter School is seeking Middle School Special Education Teachers for the founding year in its newest turnaround school. Through the School District of Philadelphia’s Renaissance Schools initiative, Young Scholars was matched with Frederick Douglass Elementary School and charged with transforming the school into a quality learning environment. The team is proud to announce that Young Scholars Douglass Charter School is now open for the 2010-2011 school year.

This is a unique opportunity to transform a historically low-performing school into a high-quality center of learning that will positively impact students’ lives. The Search Committee seeks energetic and motivated individuals dedicated to transforming a school where at-risk students will flourish academically, socially and emotionally and graduate prepared to succeed at the best high schools and colleges.

SPECIAL EDUCATION AT YOUNG SCHOLARS SCHOOLS
We believe that all students are not only capable of meeting but exceeding standards and expectations, including students with special needs. Approximately 15% of our students receive special education services. We are committed to identifying students’ needs quickly and providing both academic and behavioral support to ensure their goals are met. Our method is a hybrid approach combining inclusion and small group instruction.

TEACHING
• Provide direct instruction and services to assigned students with IEPs and 504 Plans including, but not limited to, writing goals and objectives, administering and interpreting individual formal and informal assessments.
• Work with other instructional staff members to plan for and modify instruction of students with IEPs and 504 Plans.
• Collaborating with classroom teachers and the rest of the special education staff on a daily basis to meet the specific needs of the students.
• Participate in development activities (grade level and school-wide meetings, professional development days, the professional development institute) to continuously improve personal practice, classroom instruction, assessment, and student achievement, as well as the overall goals and mission of the school and the network.
• Communicating frequently with students, students’ families, colleagues and other stakeholders and involving them in academic activities, to support the success of a diverse student population and to bring in volunteers and additional resources, while remaining sensitive to different families’ cultures, values and needs
• Partnering with the Special Education Coordinator to ensure full compliance with special education law
• Fulfill all outlined and related functions professionally, timely and thoroughly.

QUALIFICATIONS/REQUIREMENTS:
• Bachelor’s Degree in Special Education, or a related field
• Two years teaching experience in special education
• Required state teaching certification in special education; Highly Qualified status under No Child Left Behind
• Demonstrated ability to implement classroom strategies effective for special education population
• Experience teaching in elementary special education
• A passion for working with students with disabilities and students in an urban environment
