Microsoft Grant Announcement

Applications due September 16, 2002

Please find attached a copy of the Microsoft Charlotte TEC Grant Application. If you are aware of a local 501 C 3 (non-profit) organization seeking funding for a technology grant, please feel free to forward this e-mail to their attention. Microsoft Technology Enriched Communities Grant is (a $15,000 Cash and more than $20,000 in Software Donations) to assist non-profit organizations in one of the following threes Microsoft philanthropic objectives:
– Enriching people’s lives through enhanced technology access;
– Strengthening nonprofits through technology;
– Expanding and diversifying the technology workforce.

Examples of the types of programs that meet each of the three objectives are as
follows:

Enriching people’s lives through enhanced technology access
– Creating a technology access center for a low-income rural community. This provided access to technology resources such as low-cost training programs, basic computer skills and Internet instruction.
– Programs that outfit disabled individuals with assistive technologies.

Strengthening nonprofits through technology
– Assisting a Latino community center to disseminate culturally specific information via a web portal to expand their communication methods beyond printed materials. This allowed the organization to reach a broader audience and build a “cyber community.”
– Providing technology assistance to enhance the nonprofit’s communication, organizational efficiency, use of the internet/intranet and the delivery of service to constituents.

Expanding and diversifying the technology workforce
– Outfitting a “resource room” or computer lab in a low income housing project that offers residents courses in web design, graphic design and multimedia production.
– Supporting a computer lab where disabled adults can attend training and vocational programs.
