HELP PHILADELPHIA’S YOUNG WOMEN and MEN
BECOME ACTIVE.MENTOR AT PARKWAY PEACE AND SOCIAL JUSTICE HIGH SCHOOL.
Parkway Peace and Social Justice High School is a Philadelphia Public school located in Mt. Airy at 7500 Germantown Ave. Students obtain a college preparatory education and are encouraged to become engaged in their local and global community.
At Parkway Peace, students develop the knowledge and problem-solving skills necessary for responding peacefully to the violence in their communities and globally. Integral to any student’s success in school and in life, however, are the relationships developed with adults. Therefore, in an effort to supply every ninth grade student with the support they need, all Parkway freshmen are offered the services of a tutor and/or mentor. We are looking for caring adults who could mentor and tutor our students in a way which would enrich their abilities to create peace and social justice in their everyday lives.
Mentors: A student is matched with a mentor depending on gender, interests, career aspirations, and location. A mentor offers advice and a positive influence and is an adult ally and friend to help them navigate these challenging and formative years. We ask that mentors make at least a one year commitment, contacting the student once a week (phone or email) and meeting monthly. These meetings may involve participating in a common interest and sharing any skills or interests that you may have, or participating in a special activity such as a poetry slam or an art project organized by our Student Community Development Center.
Tutors: We need people with a proficiency in high school subjects – such as math, science, writing, and Spanish – to assist students in these academic areas. Tutoring involves meeting regularly with the student after school, on the school campus.
The gift of your time and wisdom will not only be rewarding for both you and the student, but also strengthens and sustains the school community.
Please let us know if you would like to volunteer to be either a mentor or tutor, and feel free to write with any questions or concerns.
