Mentor with Building Bridges Mentoring Program
Posted by Building Bridges Mentoring Program on September 1, 2020
This program offers the opportunity to mentor a child for one year in the lower Kensington neighborhoods. Our program reaches 80% Latino and 20% Black youth. The children are between the ages of 10 – 16. We want to disrupt the school to prison pipeline and we can do it one mentor at a time.
Our program is unique as it provides training and support for our mentors, both before and after they are matched with a young person. We also provide assistance with getting all applicable clearances processed and paid for to volunteer with youth.
The mentors are supported by the Program Director who calls and checks in once a week and are provided continuing education. We also offer gift cards, upon request, for the mentors/mentees and invite everyone in the program to a monthly group activity.
Research shows that if only one caring adult can reach out and mentor a child for one year that child will have a better chance to stay in school and graduate from high school.
