What’s Math Got to Do with It?: Math education plays pivotal role in social justice

When we think about social justice issues, what comes to mind? Racial equality, LGBTQ+ rights, gun violence, access to health care, maybe even literacy. It’s not likely that mathematics would make anyone’s top ten list.
But, once you look below the surface, it’s clear that math education and mathematics itself are core to social justice.
Significant racial disparities in access to advanced math courses is a problem, with Black and Latino students less likely to take calculus, for example, than White or Asian American students. In this blog post, Pamela Burdman, executive director of Just Equations, says math education — which ultimately has a role in the government’s future social decisions — should prioritize social justice so education outcomes and future opportunities are more equitable.
