The Organization
Entrepreneur Works is a non-profit 501(c)(3) microenterprise development organization focused on growing businesses and jobs in our local communities. Our mission is to cultivate and promote successful entrepreneurs in underserved areas of the Greater Philadelphia region – entrepreneurs who then become economic engines in their own neighborhoods. By connecting hundreds of entrepreneurs each year with access to capital, one-on-one technical assistance, business training and networking opportunities, Entrepreneur Works helps promising individuals to develop economic self-sufficiency and create job opportunities through business ownership.

Position Summary
The Marketing & Communications Intern will assist with marketing, writing and editing, and public relations tasks to increase publicity, awareness, and support for Entrepreneur Works. Approximately 15-20 hours per week, this is an in-office, unpaid position (course credit OK). The intern must be able to travel to our Philadelphia office at 111 S. Independence Mall East, Suite 810 during regular office hours. This position begins ASAP and ends in May 2012.
Primary Responsibilities
– Write and compile information from staff for e-newsletter; create e-newsletter and distribute to appropriate contacts lists
– Maintain and update organization’s website with events, classes, workshops, client stories, etc.
– Assist staff members with writing correspondence and editing other print materials
– Create and/or update promotional flyers
– Draft and edit press releases
– Help train new marketing & communications intern
– Other related tasks as assigned
Student Learning & Benefits
Specific skills and experiences to be gained will include: writing and packaging marketing materials to promote a local nonprofit, and familiarity with business writing, marketing, and professional email communication. Overall, the student will gain a sense of what it is like to work at a small, community-oriented nonprofit organization, particularly one that serves underserved entrepreneurs.
Appropriate Areas of Study
Those studying Communications, Marketing, Business, Community Development, and Entrepreneurship are particularly encouraged to apply, but the position is open to students of any major who feel a strong interest or connection to the project.
Software & Technology Used for Position
While previous hands-on experience with every software program below is not mandatory, the candidate must be tech-savvy and able to learn very quickly:
– Drupal CMS (very similar to WordPress and fairly easy to learn)
– Vertical Response (email distribution service)
– Creative Suite 5.0 (particularly InDesign)
– Microsoft Office Suite
Skills and Attributes
– The intern must be a very strong writer
– Excellent written and verbal communications skills
– Ability to learn new software programs quickly
– Ability to work both independently and collaboratively
