Marketing and Outreach Coordinator, Mariposa Food Co-op
Posted on: July 30, 2011
Mariposa Food Co-op is a member-owned West Philadelphia food co-op in the midst of an exciting and long-awaited expansion. As we prepare to open a new, larger storefront in the neighborhood, we are hiring a Marketing and Outreach Coordinator to manage design, communication, and event planning tasks related to publicizing and advertising the Co-op, and communicating with members and the general public about the Co-op. This position will be part of a Co-Management Team within our Staff Collective structure.
The Marketing and Outreach Coordinator position will average 20 hours long-term, though 30-40 hours will be necessary at least at the outset. Mariposa strives to employ as many full-time equivalent workers as possible. Therefore, the Marketing & Outreach Coordinator is fully eligible to add on hours through work in other departments as marketing resposibilities wane after opening. In addition to daytime office hours, some nights and weekends will be necessary for events.
Purpose: To develop and enact a comprehensive marketing plan to promote Mariposa Food Co-op both in-store and in the community, in order to meet goals for sales, sales to membership, and building a larger and more diverse membership base. To increase Mariposa’s visibility in the community through outreach and networking, cultivating relationships with funders, legislators, and allied organizations that further Mariposa’s future development goals. To design and maintain co-op literature, templates, and a variety of internal signage, ensuring a culturally inclusive, accessible environment in the store’s aesthetics and in Mariposa’s visual media.
Primary Responsibilities:
Development of marketing plan as part of annual business plan.
Develop and coordinate advertising budget and strategies for store. Create consistent ad copy and layout, and place advertisements in local media.

Oversee design and content of Mariposa website and messaging through social media.
Produce other publications/communications for membership and promotions as needed: emails, special flyers, fact sheets, nutrition information, recipes, etc.
Cultivate relationships with other allied organizations and local businesses and explore opportunities for participation in relevant community events. Make connections with new communities (especially under-represented communities) and organizations.
Coordinate co-op-sponsored events. Develop concept, goals, budget, and schedule, recruit member-workers and staff as needed, and arrange for publicity and media coverage.
Qualifications:
Experience with marketing and/or advertising, preferably in a non-profit or cooperative setting.
Ability to create, administer and work with budgets.
Excellent verbal and written communications skills—clear instructions, attentive listening.
Demonstrated computer graphics skills.
Proven ability to supervise and coordinate the work of volunteers.
Organized, detail oriented.
Willingness and ability to learn in order to meet the requirements of the job as they evolve.
Demonstrated ability to prioritize, self-manage, and follow through on commitments.
Ability to effectively self-direct as well as cooperate within the Staff Collective and other related groups.
Ability to relate with integrity to people of diverse backgrounds.
Desired:
Contacts in Philadelphia and surrounding communities.
Interest in alternative business models.
Experience working collectively and/or with consensus decision-making.
Experience with co-operatives (especially food) and/or non-profit organizations.
Thorough familiarity with and enthusiasm for sustainability, food justice, and other issues related to the Co-op’s mission and operations.
Grassroots organizing experience and skills.
Compensation and Benefits:
$12.25/hour with an annual raise
Health savings account
Two weeks paid vacation, with annual increase in vacation time
Generous sick/personal days
